A> Description

The Complete Guide to the Amstrad PCW 8256 & 8512 was an independent British guide/publication focused on Amstrad PCW computers (especially the 8256 and 8512 and their annual issues or "Yearbooks"). Its format is more reminiscent of a magazine-guide or specialized supplement than a traditional technical book. Each issue compiled details of over 400 PCW-compatible products, including hardware, software, peripherals, and utilities, featuring analysis and descriptions to help the user decide on purchases and use cases.

The content included reviews of productivity programs, communications, games, and utilities; as well as specific sections on hardware such as printers, mice, desktop publishing, and expansions. It was a “best buy guide” aimed at both novice and experienced users, providing explanations, comparisons, and recommendations for using the PCW in different environments (business, leisure, productivity).

Identification: The Complete Guide to the Amstrad PCW

This publication was not a monthly magazine, but a massive reference guide (bookazine style) that served as the definitive catalogue for system users.

  • The 400 Product Catalogue: Its most famous feature was, indeed, the inclusion of an exhaustive directory reviewing more than 400 products available for the PCW. This included everything from management software and databases to specialized hardware peripherals.

  • Technical Content and Software:

  • Hardware: It offered in-depth analysis of memory expansions, external disk drives, mice (such as the AMX Mouse), and printer interfaces.

  • Software: It was the primary source for discovering programs that "pushed the PCW beyond its limits," such as desktop publishing software and advanced utilities for the CP/M Plus operating system.

  • Update Role: It kept the user informed by reviewing the year's innovations, serving as a "bridge" of knowledge between Amsoft's basic manuals and the professional needs of the users.

  • Publisher: It was produced by the Database Publications team, the same team that edited the monthly magazine Computing with the Amstrad, which guaranteed a very high level of technical detail.

This guide is remembered as the buying "Bible" for any PCW 8256 or 8512 owner who wanted to professionalize their equipment.
