Description
La Abadía del Crimen (The Abbey of Crime) is the undisputed masterpiece of Spanish 8-bit software and one of the greatest milestones in video game history. Conceived and programmed by the genius Paco Menéndez, featuring magnificent architectural graphics by Juan Delcán, the game was originally published in 1987 under the Opera Soft label. Freely inspired by Umberto Eco's famous novel "The Name of the Rose", the adventure immerses the player into the role of Franciscan friar William of Occam, accompanied by his young novice Adso, on a mission to solve a series of gruesome murders perpetrated in a medieval Italian Benedictine abbey.

Historically, Opera Soft stood out for porting almost all of its commercial releases to the Amstrad PCW range, taking advantage of the company's unifed internal development framework. However, due to its extreme technical and logical complexity, La Abadía del Crimen was programmed completely in isolation and custom-tailored for the Amstrad CPC, later jumping to MSX, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, and PC (CGA/EGA), entirely sidelining the business-oriented green phosphor monitor range. This blatant historical absence was finally rectified 25 years later, in 2012, by the prolific developer and preservationist HabiSoft, who brought retrocomputing justice to the platform by building this formidable native port.

The technical development of this conversion was a colossal reverse-engineering challenge involving raw Z80 machine code. The author meticulously extracted the logical structure and binaries of the Amstrad CPC version from its original disk, dumping them in order into the respective memory pages of the PCW architecture. Since the PCW's graphic hardware differs drastically from that of the CPC, HabiSoft implemented an ingenious real-time translation routine: the game engine processes the native sprites while keeping the CPC data structure, and right before dumping the final visual output into the screen buffer, the patched code intercepts the data and translates it on the fly to the PCW's pixel structure. This engineering feat delivers remarkable smoothness despite the penalty in CPU cycles. The version is 100% playable and completable from start to finish, including critical disk format fixes and substantial control optimizations to ensure an optimal experience on real hardware or emulation.

Strategies, Advanced Investigation, and Official Mechanics
• Monastery Routine and Obsequium Bar: Daily life within the abbey is strictly regulated by canonical hours (Matins, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline). It is absolutely mandatory to follow the Abbot's movements and attend church service or the refectory punctually. Disobeying these orders, wandering around off-hours, or being caught in the corridors at night will deplete your "Obsequium" (obedience) bar. If it reaches zero, you will be promptly expelled from the abbey, triggering an immediate game over.

• The Enigma of the Labyrinth and the Mirror: The locked library conceals an isometric maze mathematically designed to disorient players. To navigate it without getting lost, you must acquire the manuscript detailing the rooms or use the initials of each chamber as geographical indicators. The hidden entrance is guarded by a massive mirror that requires a specific light source (the oil lamp) and deciphering the mechanic hidden behind its reflections.

• Critical Item Gathering: The adventure cannot be successfully completed without retrieving vital items at specific points of the day: the lamp to explore pitch-black zones (and the oil to refill it), the glasses to read faded words in the manuscript, the key to the herbarium to access forbidden substances, and the final scroll that exposes the murderer at the climax of the seventh day. To pick up items, simply stand in front of them (William can carry up to six objects, while Adso can hold two different ones). To drop them, pull Joystick down, which discards the item located furthest to the left on the status indicator.

• Managing Adso and AI Bottlenecks: Friar Adso acts as your secondary inventory and will warn you when hazards are nearby. As long as his command key is held down, he will travel in the same direction William is facing, unless he runs into an obstacle. His artificial intelligence can easily get stuck on corners or doorways due to the isometric projection if you move too quickly. Halt your movement for a second if Adso loses his tracking; if the Abbot finds him wandering alone at night, your Obsequium will plummet.

• HabiSoft's Development Tweaks (2012): Unlike the rigid limitations of the original systems (where saved memory snapshots vanished upon resetting the computer), this version lets you seamlessly back up your data using the quick save-to-disk feature by pressing [+] and [TAB]. Use RAM memory slots right before stepping into the labyrinth or listening to the Abbot's sermons, and perform regular disk backups to safeguard your progress under any circumstances.

• Copy Protection and Murder Investigation Consistency: In the original 80s commercial releases, if the software detected an uncracked duplicate or if you attempted to bypass the logic engine by visiting rooms out of sequence, the game would play the famous "Ave Maria" melody in an infinite loop, freezing the controls. HabiSoft's port strictly retains this logical consistency, meaning you must progress strictly by following each day's investigative clues to unlock the authentic ending.
