Description
The legendary "Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior", one of the most outstanding masterpieces of the one-on-one fighting genre on 8-bit systems, was originally developed and published in 1987 by the British studio Palace Software. Designed by Steve Brown with an iconic soundtrack composed by the brilliant Richard Joseph, the title made retro computing history due to both its fluid sword-combat animations and its highly controversial advertising campaign. The game immerses us in a sword-and-sorcery fantasy setting where we must guide our warrior through bloody deathmatches against brutal opponents controlled by the AI or a second player sharing the same computer. The ultimate goal is to defeat the evil sorcerer Drax in order to rescue Princess Mariana, making use of a wide tactical array of sword strikes, including the mythical and lethal instant decapitation move.
This marvelous technical achievement for the Amstrad PCW was brought to life by Enrique G. Gálvez in 2024. Taking the original ZX Spectrum architecture port as its pure foundation, Gálvez drastically expands the capabilities of the PCW computing ecosystem by injecting advanced multimedia routines. The optimized monochrome graphics engine stands out with magnificent smoothness, but this version shines exceptionally in its commitment to historical preservation. A clear example of this is the inclusion of the striking presence of model Maria Whittaker on the digital loading screen, beautifully replicating the original cover art. A true piece of retro engineering designed to keep video gaming's greatest milestones alive on the machine's Z80 hardware.

Keyboard and Controls
This version optimizes the fighters' direct response in the arena through a refined reading of the keyboard matrix. The game includes a complete initial menu that allows the user to play single matches against the AI or dive into the addictive local multiplayer versus mode for two players on a single machine, with the ability to fully redefine the action keys. It features native out-of-the-box support for digital joysticks under the DK'Tronics standard. On the acoustic side, the engine is a true customization milestone: it allows playing the original soundtrack via ZX Spectrum buzzer music or squeezing the Amstrad CPC music through the DK'Sound external hardware expansion. The default controls are:
Q Key:Move Up / Jump / High Attack (Redefinible)
A Key:Move Down / Crouch / Low Attack (Redefinible)
O Key:Move Left / Defense (Redefinible)
P Key:Move Right / Advance (Redefinible)
SPACEBAR:Fire Button / Combine strikes with the Sword (Redefinible)
Tips and Tricks to Beat the Game
• Alternate the Sound Settings: Do not hesitate to try different sound options in the startup menu. Enjoy the raw grit of the ZX Spectrum buzzer music or connect your DK'Sound expansion card to experience the multi-channel arrangements from the Amstrad CPC version.
• Master the Lethal Sword Spin: The instant decapitation move (executed via a precise combination of direction and attack button) requires absolute timing. If performed at the wrong moment, you will be left completely defenseless against a devastating counterattack.
• Control Arena Spacing: Monitor your position relative to the screen edges. Cornering your opponent grants a fundamental advantage to land direct hits and deplete their health bar before they can switch to a defensive stance.
• Learn AI Mask Patterns: In single-player mode, each AI fighter exhibits specific attack tendencies (some prioritize low sweeps, others favor jumping attacks). Memorize their routines to shield yourself properly before striking.
• Watch Out for the Arena Goblin: When a warrior is defeated, the iconic green goblin will appear to drag the body off-screen. Use those brief seconds of respite to readjust your strategy for the next match.
