Description
Originally released in 1986 by the famous label Imagine Software and conceived by the brilliant developer Duško Dimitrijević, Movie stands out as one of the ultimate masterpieces of isometric perspective on 8-bit systems. Set in the ruthless criminal underworld of 1930s New York, this title marked a mature evolution of the graphic adventure genre by blending environmental exploration with a classic film noir aesthetic. This port holds invaluable documentary merit within the software preservation scene: it is the very first video game to be fully ported from the ZX Spectrum architecture to the Amstrad PCW by developer HabiSoft, completed after an exhaustive optimization process of the native Z80 machine code.
The narrative puts us in the shoes of Jack, a trenchcoat-and-fedora-wearing private detective taking on the most dangerous case of his career: infiltrating the headquarters of the fearsome gangster "Bugsy" Malone. The goal is to recover a briefcase packed with highly confidential documents hidden deep within a massive, multi-story fortified stronghold. To heighten the stakes, Jack must not only dodge submachine gun bursts from the mobsters patrolling the corridors, but also locate and safely escort his beloved girlfriend, Tanya, who is trapped somewhere inside the building.
The gameplay mechanics were a complete revolution thanks to a sophisticated system of contextual interaction handled through graphic menus and speech bubbles ("think" and "talk" icons). Players can search furniture, pick up firearms, punch with their fists, or negotiate and interrogate various non-playable characters roaming the rooms, whose reactions change based on your inventory or attitude. The visual fidelity of the original isometric engine has been brought over with pristine clarity to the Amstrad PCW's green phosphor screen, completely eliminating the classic color attribute clash issues of the Spectrum thanks to the sharp, high-resolution monochrome nature of Amstrad's business computer line.
HabiSoft's adaptation work shines brightly as it circumvents the deep technical disparities between both classic machines. Since the PCW lacks the specific screen-mapping and color registers found on the Spectrum, every graphic routine for the isometric rendering had to be restructured and filtered at the Z80 machine code level. The final result delivers fluid performance and robust gameplay that honors the legendary Imagine Software brand and the iconic cover art illustrated by Bob Wakelin, establishing this port as an indispensable piece of software archaeology and a living testament to the technical talent applied to legacy hardware emulation and preservation.

Hints and Tips to Complete the Game
• Isometric Steering: To master navigation within Bugsy's hideout, practice steering diagonally by combining direction inputs. When passing through doorways or transitioning into new rooms, calculate your visual approach angle carefully so you don't get snagged on the boundaries of logic walls.
• Strategic Interrogations: Mobsters and civilians wandering around aren't always hostile at first glance. Use the dialogue ("talk") icon to gather vital clues about Tanya's whereabouts and the missing briefcase. Their disposition and information will change drastically if you pull a gun on them or offer a bribe.
• Ammunition Management: Do not waste your bullets on low-level thugs. Your revolver's ammunition is extremely scarce across the map; lean on hand-to-hand combat ("punch") whenever you encounter isolated enemies in enclosed areas.
• Search Every Corner: Use the contextual menu to thoroughly search wardrobes, filing cabinets, and desks. Many of the crucial documents required to solve the investigation and unlock the safes are hidden behind the decorative geometry of the main offices.
