Verified Historical Information

Imagine Software Ltd. was one of the most iconic and influential British video game developers and publishers of the early 1980s microcomputer boom. Established in Liverpool in 1982 by former Bug-Byte members, the company experienced meteoric growth driven by high-budget advertising campaigns, a top-tier art department, and flamboyant management practices.

Despite massive commercial success with their initial titles on home systems like the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64, soaring operational expenses and heavy investments in unfinished, over-ambitious projects (collectively known as the "Mega Games": Bandersnatch and Psyclapse) triggered a severe cash-flow crisis. This resulted in a historic, court-ordered liquidation for unpaid debts in July 1984, an event captured in real-time by the BBC for the documentary series Commercial Breaks.

Following the auction of its assets, the trademark rights to the brand name and logo were acquired by direct competitors, Ocean Software. In this second phase (post-1984), the firm operated strictly as a subsidiary publishing label under Ocean. The label was utilized to release domestic conversions of major Japanese arcade hits licensed from developers such as Konami and Taito, targeted at the primary 8-bit gaming platforms in the European market.
