Description

Pinboard Computers was a British hardware support, peripheral, and advanced consumables company for 8-bit computing that played a critical lifesaving role throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. As Amstrad Plc progressively discontinued spare parts for its Joyce range and the cost of native 3" floppy disks grew prohibitively expensive, Pinboard Computers became the reference provider and engineering firm for the British userbase to migrate their PCW machines to the industry-standard 3.5-inch storage format.

Developed & Distributed Hardware

Unlike traditional peripheral manufacturers of the previous decade, Pinboard focused its efforts on system hybridization to guarantee operational longevity:

  • DataDual 8 and DataTwin 8 Storage Systems: A comprehensive hardware kit consisting of secondary external 3.5-inch disk drives assembled with precision TEAC mechanism units (such as the TEAC FD-235HF model). These expansions allowed PCW 8256 and 8512 users to format and operate standard PC floppy disks at a capacity of 706 KB in double density.
  • Switchable 'A' Drive Unit (3.5"): An advanced hardware modification that allowed for the complete replacement of the computer's internal primary 3" disk drive with a 3.5" drive mechanism, integrating a custom electronic toggle switch to prevent hardware polling read conflicts during initial CP/M operating system boot.
  • Peripheral & Memory Expansion Distribution: Pinboard acted as the main retailer and packaging hub for critical allied hardware expansions, such as the 256 KB Voltmace Delta memory upgrade modules and the CPS8256 parallel/serial printer interfaces, which were instrumental in connecting modern 1990s inkjet printers (like the Canon BJ series) to the PCW mainboard.
  • Consumibles & Printer Ribbons: Succeeded in the continuous manufacturing and specialized re-inking of ribbons for the built-in matrix printer of the PCW8000 series long after Amsoft abandoned production lines.
Support Software & Integration

The physical hybridization of 3.5-inch floppy drives required a deep low-level compatibility layer. Pinboard Computers did not just supply the custom 34-pin twist ribbon adapter cables; they officially distributed a suite of system utilities developed in collaboration with Locomotive Software. These utilities included automatic bootstrap installers and hardware drivers, such as the A35.FIB executable block. This driver was engineered specifically to intercept the native PCW BIOS during startup and natively identify the physical drive A: as a Pinboard 3.5" device, ensuring flawless font rendering and data transfer speeds within LocoScript v2.66 and v3.06 onwards.
