Core Design Limited was one of the most celebrated British software development houses of the late 80s and the 1990s. Founded in 1988 in Derby by a group of industry veterans led by Jeremy Heath-Smith, Kevin Norburn, and key former programmers from Gremlin Graphics, the company quickly established its reputation through its high technical standards and visual originality.
In its early years, Core Design successfully focused on the most widespread 8-bit home computers of the era, such as the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and the Amstrad CPC range. Their initial productions, most notably the unforgettable Rick Dangerous, demonstrated a masterful command of assembly code to squeeze the most out of the common Z80 CPU architecture.
The technical impact of these optimized routines benefited the Amstrad PCW ecosystem through the preservation and porting of their major entertainment hits into CP/M compatible formats. Although Core Design would achieve massive global fame in the 16-bit and 32-bit eras with the birth of the Tomb Raider franchise and the character Lara Croft in 1996, their gaming roots remained deeply embedded in the golden age of classic microcomputers.
The company was acquired by the CentreGold group in 1994, which was subsequently absorbed by Eidos Interactive in 1996. Following a brand restructuring and the sale of its development assets to Rebellion Developments in 2006, the original Derby studio closed its doors permanently in 2010. Nevertheless, its classic 8-bit catalog is still considered a pinnacle of British programming from that period.
