Historical Information

Imagine Software Ltd. was one of the most meteoric and influential British software companies of the early 1980s. Founded in Liverpool in 1982 after its creators departed Bug-Byte, the company revolutionized the market through aggressive advertising campaigns, impeccable artistic cover designs, and a high-flying "Rock & Roll" management profile that attracted massive media attention.

Despite early success with systems like the ZX Spectrum, poor financial management and excessive ambition regarding unfinished projects known as "Mega Games" (Bandersnatch and Psyclapse) led the company to a spectacular and historic bankruptcy in July 1984. This collapse was famously immortalized by BBC cameras in the documentary Commercial Breaks.

Following the liquidation of its assets, the commercial label and trademark logo of Imagine Software were acquired by their former Manchester rivals, Ocean Software. Under this second period (post-1984), Ocean revitalized the brand by using it primarily to publish official conversions of major arcade hits (particularly licenses from Japanese firms like Konami and Taito). It was during this era that **Amstrad PCW** users received titles under this legendary label.

Amstrad PCW Compatibility & Infrastructure Details (Verified):

  • Native CP/M Conversions: Since the Amstrad PCW lacked a dedicated color chip and was tailored to professional environments, releases under the Imagine/Ocean label relied on optimized graphics routines for the Zilog Z80 processor, converting titles originally designed for the Amstrad CPC.
  • Physical Distribution: Preserved archive materials confirm that these video games reached the market on Amstrad's unique native 3-inch floppy disks (Single Sided), duplicated and distributed massively across British and European retail markets.
Preserved Software Products (Amstrad PCW Line)
Action and Arcade Video Games (Ocean/Imagine Label) Arkanoid (1986) - Conversion of Taito's arcade smash hit; faithfully adapted in monochrome format for PCW screens running on CP/M. Renegade (1987) - Conversion of the celebrated beat 'em up by Technos/Taito, distributed under the Imagine trademark. Target: Renegade (1988) - Direct sequel to the street-fighting game, successfully brought to the 3" floppy disk format. Green Beret (1986) - Conversion of Konami's classic military arcade game under the Imagine commercial label.
