Description
Originally released in late 1984 by the legendary British company Ultimate Play The Game (founded by brothers Chris and Tim Stamper), Knight Lore became an instant, absolute milestone in the history of 8-bit gaming. In an era dominated by flat 2D environments, this title revolutionized the market by introducing the acclaimed Filmation Engine. This technical achievement implemented a pseudo-3D isometric perspective for the very first time, where objects possessed true volume, cast shadows, gravity, and the ability to interact and be stacked on top of each other. The impact was monumental across systems like the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, BBC Micro, MSX, and Commodore 64, defining the foundations of a completely new graphic exploration genre.
Now, HabiSoft brings us an iconic and highly meticulous port of this Ultimate masterpiece. Faithful to his philosophy of squeezing maximum performance out of retro platforms, this port launched in 2020 makes brilliant use of one of the newest color interface features for the Amstrad PCW ecosystem. Upon loading, the game lets the user choose their display preference right at the beginning: if monochrome is selected, the code patches the graphics in real time within the video memory so they display with absolute contrast under the native high resolution of classic monitors. If color is chosen and the hardware graphic interface expansion is active, the system automatically switches to full graphic mode and changes the palette to match the original Amstrad CPC version, fully respecting its rich and iconic visual retro identity.
The plot immerses us in the curse of Sabreman, the charismatic explorer who, after being attacked during his journeys, finds himself trapped within the labyrinthine depths of Knight Castle as a lycanthrope (the fearsome Wulfman). The player has a strict limit of forty days and forty nights of simulated time to explore more than a hundred dangerous interconnected rooms. The crucial goal is to gather and carry the correct ingredients demanded sequentially by the Magic Cauldron of the old wizard Melkhior to synthesize the final antidote before being trapped as a werewolf forever. The passage of time is continuously tracked via an on-screen display that cycles between sun and moon phases; each transition triggers a painful real-time physical transformation that completely changes the gameplay pace and environmental hostility. This game proved more complicated to port than recent developments, but it served HabiSoft to refine complex rendering techniques and input routines. Thanks to thorough optimization in the Z80 machine code, the development runs with outstanding speed, granting incredible joystick controls and excellent sound quality for real hardware or expanded systems.

Dimensions for 3“ diskettes: Height: 7.00 cm - Width: 7.10 cm.
Extras
Keyboard and Controls
The system includes native support for an excellent joystick control layout alongside fully optimized sound routines. The isometric layout controls are mapped by default to the following official keys:
Q Key:FORWARD (Move forward in the direction of the gaze)
A Key:BACKWARD (Move backward facing away)
O Key:TURN LEFT (Rotate gaze 90 degrees to the left)
P Key:TURN RIGHT (Rotate gaze 90 degrees to the right)
SPACEBAR:JUMP (Vertical axis movement using Filmation physics)
SYM Key:PICK UP / DROP (Collect or drop items from your inventory)
Hints and Tips to Beat the Game
• Managing the Cauldron Ingredients: Melkhior's Cauldron requires a strict sequence of 14 specific items that float over it one by one. Dropping an incorrect ingredient causes it to be forcefully deflected, costing valuable time. A vital strategy is to systematically collect and organize duplicate objects in the rooms immediately adjacent to the main cauldron area to optimize travel distance during late-game loops.
• Physics, Weight, and Block Stacking: The Filmation engine strictly calculates weight and spatial inertia. Pushing blocks, tables, and stools to form makeshift steps is essential. Jumping precisely at the edge of a moving block while pushing it grants a subtle momentum boost calculated by the engine, allowing you to bridge wide gaps filled with lethal spikes.
• Transformation Invulnerability Window: The exact moment when the shape-shifting animation triggers between human Sabreman and the werewolf (Wulfman) grants a brief window of absolute invincibility. Time the solar and lunar cycles on the UI display to cross enemy lines of fire or slip past indestructible ghosts safely.
• Jumping over Monsters and Geometry Exploits: Lethal patrol hazards and moving enemies can be treated as dynamic platforms. You can carefully jump directly onto their heads to scale high ledges, bypassing the tedious need to drag heavy block structures from distant rooms.
