Description
Spirits is a landmark title from the Golden Age of Spanish Software, originally released in 1987. It marked the official debut of the Madrid-based studio Topo Soft after establishing development independence from distributor ERBE Software. Graphically designed by Gaby López and originally programmed by Javier Cano, the game plunges us into a bleak medieval fantasy where an evil sorcerer has cast the lands into darkness. To fight him, players control a wizard capable of fragmenting his soul and casting out his astral spirit in an ethereal form. This innovative mechanic introduces a single-player cooperative gameplay model where body and spirit must work together to avoid deadly traps and navigate mazes.
While the game was highly acclaimed on systems like the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, MSX, and Amstrad CPC due to its addictive loop and the unforgettable, melancholic soundtrack composed by César Astudillo "Gominolas", Amstrad PCW users were left without a commercial release at the time. In 2019, preservationist and developer HabiSoft corrected this historical absence by creating a spectacular native conversion for the PCW range. In the author's own words: "It turned out to be another easy game to port from the CPC, once again due to the Spectrum emulation it performs. Unlike Pac-Mania, in this case, we actually gain speed compared to that version."
This conversion takes fantastic advantage of Amstrad's office computers. Thanks to the custom optimizations applied, the gameplay is incredibly smooth, and the overall frame rate feels more dynamic than the original CPC release. The monochromatic presentation has been masterfully tailored using a clean dithered matrix layout that completely eliminates ghosting artifacts on classic green phosphor monitors. The map itself spans two parallel, symmetrical fortresses (the Castle of Light and the Castle of Shadows) linked by magic gateways. Essential items change locations randomly with every new playthrough, offering a fresh layout challenge even for seasoned retro mapmakers.

Survival Hints and Strategy Guidelines (Verified)
• Managing the Duality Model (Body-Spirit): The core challenge of Spirits lies in placing your physical body to step on floor triggers while sending your ethereal spirit out to pass through solid obstacles. Always secure your physical body in hazard-free corridors before desynchronizing, as taking damage while split triggers an instant life loss.
• Light Energy Conservation: Casting magical spheres drains your spell gauge rapidly. Do not waste projectile charges on minor monsters that respawn infinitely; preserve magical meter assets for main checkpoint guardians and high-altitude target triggers.
• Symmetrical Gate Synchronization: Both twin layouts mirror each other's spatial structure. If you hit an absolute dead end, find the nearest dimensional waypoint. Shifting between planes modifies active block barriers on the corresponding room.
• Dynamic Placement Layout: Core quest objects required to trigger the ending sequence alter their coordinate rooms dynamically upon launching the disc structure. Learn map layouts thoroughly, but never assume talisman icons occupy the exact same chests twice.

Complete Game Completion Strategy Guide
• Dynamic Mapping of the Twin Castles: Since no physical paper map exists due to the chalices and relics changing rooms on every boot sequence, the best mapping approach is to draw a standard 7x7 grid. Mark each chamber alongside its matching counter-room in the Shadow realm to plot optimal routing and fast extraction corridors.
• Quick Magic Regeneration Trick: There are specific safe rooms cleared of enemy entities located right next to dimensional nodes. Leaving your wizard stationary in these specific sectors allows the ethereal spell gauge to auto-recharge slowly back to full capacity without any time penalty drawbacks.
• Definitive Victory Criteria: To successfully finish the quest, you must coordinate your astral spirit to gather all 4 elemental gems scattered across the Castle of Shadows and transport them back to the holy altar located in the Castle of Light. Once safely deposited, reunite with your physical form and proceed toward the northern gate of the starting screen to lift the curse.
