Description
The legendary "Starbyte", originally released in 1987, stands as one of the great milestones of Spanish action and exploration software under the legendary Action Soft label and distributed by Mister Chip. Originally designed and programmed by the creative duo composed of Óscar Gallego Sendín and Celso Nores Jurado, the title emerged as an intricate and demanding platformer with multidirectional screen scrolling that challenged the skill and orientation of players at the time. Set within a massive labyrinthine base or space map environment, the mission consists of venturing into hostile territory, crossing quadrants packed with security systems, energy traps, ladders, and interconnected platforms to recover secret information diskettes and save the galaxy.
This release marks an extraordinary preservation milestone in October 2026 by developer and preservationist "Jevicac". The port breaks traditional barriers of the monochrome Amstrad PCW office ecosystem and its modular counterpart PCW# mini, adapting with exceptional technical care the complex jumping routines, physics, and collisions of the original 8-bit work. Jevicac elevates the gameplay experience to a whole new level, implementing native full Joystick support and a rich visual palette adapted to Mode 2 with 16 colors, granting spectacular chromatic vividness to each level. The audio department takes a massive leap forward thanks to the injection of music and sound effects fully optimized for the DK'Sound peripheral, while maintaining backward compatibility with the real hardware's internal buzzer.
Unlike other conventional platformers of its time, "Starbyte" stands out for its demanding tactical level design, where precise jump management and the clever use of collected objects are critical to avoid getting trapped or falling into the void. Players must memorize the labyrinths, dodge enemy sentinels, and measure every vertical or horizontal leap to the millimeter. A masterpiece of domestic retro programming, historically rescued for the posterity of the PCW community.

Tips and Tricks to Finish the Game
• Study the Labyrinth Layout: As an Action Soft exploration platformer, moving blindly will cause you to fall into traps with no return. Use the official map to plan your route through the different levels of the space base before wasting your resources.
• Take Advantage of the 16-Color Palette: Thanks to the spectacular Mode 2 implemented by Jevicac, interactive elements, critical ladders, and key diskettes stand out vividly against the base platforms. Color contrasts will prevent you from bypassing necessary mission items.
• Master the Physics and Fall Points: Jumps using the Q key demand millimeter precision. Calculate your inertia before leaping toward floating platforms or narrow ledges; a single misstep will plunge you down several screens, forcing you to retrace your path.
• Diskette and Mission Item Management: Do not waste your keys or items randomly with the A key. Each locked section or base terminal requires a specific diskette or device that you must first retrieve from the deepest quadrants of the space facility.
• Acoustic Synchronization with DK'Sound: The sound chip provides flawless audio feedback for jumps, mechanical collisions, and diskette pickups. Pay close attention to the game's acoustic rhythm to anticipate moving platforms or cyclical traps before they appear on your screen.
