Description
Originally released in 1986 by Rainbird Software and developed by the mythical British firm Argonaut Software under the direction of the brilliant Jez San, Starglider stood out immediately as one of the most astonishing technological milestones of three-dimensional software on 8-bit systems. In an era where hardware limitations severely penalized spatial computation speeds, this first-person combat simulator broke molds thanks to an advanced wireframe vector graphics engine capable of calculating physics and ballistic trajectories in real time with vertiginous fluidity. Unlike other systems of the time, the Amstrad PCW received a superb official version which, despite the native limitations of its hardware—conceived primarily for office tasks—managed to hold its own against entertainment-focused versions thanks to the excellent optimization of the Z80 processor.

The plot places us in the skies of planet Novenia, which has been ruthlessly invaded by the mechanized forces of the Egron Empire. We take the controls of the AGAV (Air Ground Attack Vehicle) starfighter, popularly nicknamed "Starglider" due to its iconic aerodynamic silhouette. The absolute goal of our mission is to patrol the planetary surface quadrants destroying enemy supply lines, heavy tanks, assault walkers, and the biggest aerial threat of the invading army: the massive Starglider mothership. However, the original experience suffered from certain bottlenecks typical of classic 1980s distribution systems, such as tedious manual-based word-matching copy protection at startup and a frame rate that struggled during tactical peak ballistic saturation on screen.

The historical preservation of this title reaches a sublime level of excellence thanks to the meticulous remastering work by Enrique Gálvez (EnriqueGGalvez) with his acclaimed **Starglider Plus Edition**. The Spanish developer has completely removed the annoying and obsolete manual word-protection system at startup, turning the compilation into a clean and purely bootable environment. The optimization of the Z80 machine code has allowed a substantial improvement in global speed when rendering vector lines. The layout of disk storage has been intelligently redesigned to enhance the user experience: disk A is responsible for preloading a spectacular digitized (sampled) musical theme directly extracted from the iconic 16-bit Atari ST version, subsequently requiring the entry of disk B. For those players looking for immediacy, disk B is fully bootable independently, allowing them to skip the introductory section to jump straight into the tactical flight simulator. Compatibility with modern expansions such as the DK'Tronics Sound (DK Sound) or the FPGA hardware architecture of the PCW# mini equips the program with dedicated AY music and sound effects and supports Mode 1 to deploy a sharp graphic arsenal in 4 colors, consolidating itself as the definitive preservation edition.

Extras
Keyboard and Controls
This edition includes full support for AY sound hardware through the DK Sound expansion and FPGA-based systems like the PCW# mini, guaranteeing an excellent response for the joystick. The default keyboard flight controls are mapped as follows:
Q Key:PITCH DOWN (Tilt the nose of the starfighter downwards)
A Key:PITCH UP (Tilt the nose of the starfighter upwards)
O Key:ROLL LEFT (Roll / Lean the fighter to the left)
P Key:ROLL RIGHT (Roll / Lean the fighter to the right)
Keys 1 - 9:ACCELERATION (Adjust the cruise speed of the AGAV)
SPACEBAR:LASER BLASTER (Fire continuous frontal laser weaponry)
M Key:MISSILE (Launch guided TV missile against static targets)
Hints and Tips to Beat the Game
• Disk A and B Loading Mechanics: Disk A contains the iconic introductory music track sampled directly from the Atari ST version. Upon concluding the playback, the interface will prompt you to insert Disk B to run the core tactical flight simulator. As a major preservation advantage in this Plus Edition, you can completely bypass the musical intro and launch directly into the game by putting Disk B into the drive as a standalone bootable disk.

• Ground Combat and Rotation Inertia: Ground enemies (Egron tanks and walkers) fire predictable but lethal projectiles. Do not stop moving in a zigzag pattern; make use of the vector engine's rotation capabilities to trace tight loops around fortified storage silos before launching your attack.

• Screen-Guided Missile Aiming: When firing a guided missile (M key), your cockpit monitor switches to the optical seeker tip of the projectile. Vector flight physics require very smooth corrections; gentle taps on the pitch keys are enough to steer it into the reactors of enemy bases or towards the vital nodes of the giant Starglider mothership.

• Refueling and Subelement Supply Lines: Constantly monitor the lateral energy and shield gauges in your cabin. When your levels drop critically, look for the energy beams from friendly recharge towers distributed across the map. Enter their vector quadrants at low speed to transfer thermal plasma and restore the AGAV's shields before being intercepted.
